First off I want to say that I fully admire the WoL map designers and the server is one of the best out there. The following is not me trying to say the server is rubbish, more that it is some thoughts I have!
Having played on the server for more than two years I've thoroughly enjoyed myself. Those who fly with me will know I fly one month for Axis and the next for Allies - mainly as a ground attacker / bomber pilot and my monthly ground kill score is usually the same whoever I fly for. Whilst the challenges for bombers are a bit different for each side I feel that the maps are pretty equal and are well designed.
However, in the past 24 months the Allies have won 19 maps and the Axis only 5. Since update 4.005, when the bomb blast damage was changed, the Axis have not won a map (it's not the only factor but it has made a big difference). For me this shows that there a problem with the current map balance.
If both teams are playing with 8-10 ground attackers and have supporting fighters then the maps are very close and it is exciting to play. The Allies are very good at playing this way and this is why they win. The Allies are playing a 'ground attack' game.
Wings of Liberty attracts a lot of new players. Often they are a bit worried about engine management or don't understand how to ground attack and so they will end up on the Axis side flying 109s. Therefore the Axis team is playing an 'air attack' game and the presence of ground targets is not important. With the maps the way they are now the 'air attack' game will never win - and it has rarely done so in two years. The Allies frequently win maps even when they are outnumbered 2 or 3:1 because their skill base is much higher and they have more ground attack pilots.
The players may have changed over the past two years but the way that they play hasn't. Allies bomb, Axis dogfight and I don't think that will ever be any different.
In order to make the server 'fairer' I would propose that the ground targets for the Axis players be changed. Perhaps by initially reducing the number of objects at each location by 10-20%. If the Axis start winning too many games then you could return a few more objects at each target.
This would allow both sides to continue to play the way that they always have but mean that there are more months when the overall scores are closer. Last month the Allies won 160:30 and most months they win by 80+ missions - even though both sides usually have similar flight times, ground kills, air kills and score. The month's when I fly Red I know I'm going to win even if I just mess around; the month's when I fly Blue I know I'm going to lose even if I try my hardest to bomb everything and get the team to work together. It's very predictable.
As I said at the beginning, this is a great server and I love it! Any small change that might help make each month a little more exciting would be hugely appreciated!
